Life for Community-Dwelling Older Seoulites before and after the COVID-19 Outbreak
Kim Jung-Hyun

Nam Hye-Jin
Abstract
Older adults were at risk for high morbidity and mortality from COVID-19 as a vulnerable population. According to the ¡®lock down¡¯ measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, older adults were forced to stay home. This study was to compare the lives of older adults in situations without and with lock-down measures. Specifically, the results of the Seoul Aging Survey in 2018 before the outbreak of the COVID-19 were compared to those in 2022 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The major differences in the results between the two surveys were rates of visiting community facilities (e.g., senior center), information-seeking sources, and perceived risk of dying alone. Specifically, the outdoor activity areas (e.g., parks) among the facilities showed the highest rates of the older adults¡¯ having visited as well as going to visit since the outbreak of the COVID-19. Due to the outbreak, the older adults have used the internet more frequently when seeking information and been aware of risk of dying alone more seriously. The findings suggest that social contact and/or support can help prevent them from dying alone. In order to deal with the social isolation of older adults who have weak social networks, it was discussed about how information and communication technology could be efficiently appled to them.
